SABMiller slides on takeover bid for Foster's
Invstors in SABMiller have given a lukewarm response to its $9.5 billion bid for Foster's, constraining the group's ability to significantly lift its offer for Australia's beer giant. Shares in London-based SABMiller opened weaker again last night after a sharp sell-off the night before on news of the bid, wiping $1bn off the value of the Anglo-South African brewing conglomerate. Foster's has rejected the bid, but analysts yesterday downplayed the likelihood of a rival bid, despite indications that Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev and Asahi of Japan, among others, are taking a strong interest in the fate of one of the world's few remaining independent brewers.
