Mexico's Grupo Modelo forms JV with U.S. food giant Cargill
Grupo Modelo, Mexico's leading beer producer and exporter, announced that it has formed a strategic partnership with U.S. food giant Cargill at Modelo's malt plant in Idaho Falls, Idaho. The Mexican company will have a 51 percent stake in the joint venture, to be called Integrow Malt LLC, while the remaining 49 percent will be held by Cargill.
Modelo said in a filing with the Mexican Stock Exchange that the goal of the partnership is to guarantee the entire supply of high-quality barley required by Integrow Malt as well as to establish a long-term relationship with a strategic supplier of malt and barley.
He added that the joint venture will promote the best operating practices at Grupo Modelo's malt plants and breweries and make the company's supply chain more efficient.
Modelo said it chose Cargill as a partner because of that company's leadership position and prestige in the agribusiness and food industry.
According to analysts, the Idaho malt factory, one of four owned by Modelo, accounts for a third of the total malt used by the Mexican company for beer production.
Grupo Modelo, founded in 1925, is Mexico's leading beer producer and exporter with a 63.3 percent market share and has seven plants in the country with total annual installed capacity of 60 million hectoliters (1.6 billion gallons).
Grupo Modelo brews and distributes 13 brands, including Corona Extra, the No. 1 Mexican beer sold worldwide; it exports five brands and is present in 159 countries and is the exclusive importer in Mexico of Anheuser-Busch Inbev's products, including Budweiser, Bud Light and O'Doul's.
