Heineken plans to malt barley in South Africa
Heineken was in talks to build a barley malting plant at its new local brewery in South Africa and a deal was expected soon, a company official said yesterday. Peralt van der Merwe, the director for business and legal affairs, said Heineken was negotiating with "a major corporation" to build the facility.
The brewery, in which global drinks maker Diageo has a 25 percent stake, is due for completion later this year. The malting plant's capacity would be about 40 000 tons a year. Van der Merwe said Heineken was importing malted barley in preparation for the brewery's start-up late in the third quarter or early in the fourth.
