GrainCorp eyes overseas harvest despite record profit
Australia's strongest wheat crop that followed good rains last year helped grain marketer GrainCorp to a record profit, but the company is looking for growth from its overseas operations for future profits. Last year, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences estimated the grains crop totalled 24 million tonnes and Graincorp received almost 15 million tonnes. For the next year, ABARES is forecasting a wheat, barley, sorghum and canola crop of 19.2 million tonnes, so GrainCorp will have considerably less than last year to market. While GrainCorp's core business has boomed and looks solid for the short term, the company is trying to get more long-term security through diversification and in July it bought GermanMalt, making it the world's fourth biggest malt producer.
